Installation Instructions for Torsen® 8.8 Inch 28 Tooth Differential into Independent Rear Suspension

Applications:  Ford Mustang Cobra ('99 and up), Ford Thunderbird ('89 - '97), Mercury Cougar ('89 - '97), and Lincoln Mark VIII (all years).

Note:  Be sure to keep right and left bearing cups, shims, and bearing journal caps separated!

  1. Verify that the center block is inserted into the differential.  If not, install the thrust block into the Torsen® differential through the window on the housing.  Holding the center washers apart, insert the thrust block between the washers.  Install the thrust block retaining pin and torque to 25 ft/lbs.
  2. Install the ring gear on the Torsen® differential.  Torque bolts as specified in the Ford Service Manual.
  3. Install two new journal bearings on Torsen® differential.
  4. Shim the differential assembly in axle carrier by the procedure given in the Ford Service Manual.
  5. Bolt journal caps on and torque to Ford specifications.
  6. Insert CV shafts into carrier.  Be sure that the snap rings have FULLY engaged the differential.
  7. Reattach the differential cover and fill the carrier (Consult owners manual for fluid and capacity).
